Sweet Talks with Melissa Culbertson of Momcomm
Sarah Stewart Holland first met Melissa at a SITS Conference in Atlanta. Sarah's immediate impression: Melissa was super sweet and very funny. THEN, she started offering very solid advice on marketing and blog development that Sarah's hand began to cramp—she was typing that fast! Over on her blog Momcomm, Melissa shares her 11 years experience in marketing communications to help mommy bloggers everywhere improve their design, develop better content, and become social media mavens. You can follow Melissa on Facebook, Twitter, and her other blog Adventuroo.

{q} What do you list as your job title on your tax return? If the form offered more space, what would you really say?
{a} Social Media and Marketing Consultant. If I had more space, I'd say sleep-deprived mama, outdoor lover, camera-clicker, and lover of food.
{q} Coffee or coconut water?
{a} Coffee, coffee, coffee!
{q} In one sentence, what’s a day in your life look like?
{a} Never enough time to spend in a day doing what I love (marketing) and spending it with who I love (family)... but I make it through anyway.
{q} What are you favorite children’s books?
{a} Where the Wild Things Are, Goodnight Moon, and anything by Mo Willems
{q} Who is your favorite fictional mother?
{a} Me? Oh wait.
{q} What do appreciate most in a mommy blogger?
{a} Capturing moments of their kids that would otherwise be forgotten in such detail.
{q} What are your fave blogs to read and why?
{a} I really like to read marketing blogs since that's the industry I'm in. Blogs like SocialMediaExaminer.com and Brass Tack Thinking.
{q} What’s the best and the most challenging aspects of your job as an entrepreneur, blogger, and mom?
{a} The best aspect: Being able to shape the direction I take and the effort I put into it all. More effort, more reward, no matter if it's blogging or spending time with kids. But I like that I'm in control and can step away or take a break if I need to (post less often, get a babysitter for a date night, etc.). Most challenging: Always feeling behind in something!
{q} If you had more hours in a day what would you do with them?
{a} Sleep!
{q} What do you think is the biggest mistake most mom bloggers make?
{a} Trying to get followers and subscribers by doing the "you follow me and I follow you" thing. It may give you a boost but more than likely you end up surround by people only wanting to build their numbers and not really wanting to read your blog.
{q} What’s your favorite hidden gem in your area? (assuming you mean physical area not area of expertise!)
{a} Love hiking on the less crowded part of Falls Lake. It's like 2 minutes down the road too-- bonus!
{q} What’s you secret online resource for finding great deals?
{a} Twitter!
{q} Rapid fire fill-in-the-blank:
Never have I ever visited Australia (but man I'd love to).
My kids taught me how to slow down and notice the little things.
I regret not being fluent in Spanish (being that I'm half latin). I'm getting closer though!
My favorite place to hike is the Grand Canyon.
My underwear is in the laundry basket still waiting to be put away.
Three words that best describe me are easy-going, hard-working and happy.
Blogging has taught me that everyone has something to give or share with others.
